Chapter 7

Jenna hushed the crowd. There was barely enough room for anyone to move. She held up her hand, whistling out a few times until everyone got quiet. “While I appreciate everyone supporting me, the right thing to do is sign only if you were a customer here last night.” After some moans and complaints, Jenna came up with another idea.

“However, I do have an alternate plan. Everyone who wants to sign a petition in support of my good character, move over to the far side of the wall. This is for those who were not here yesterday at the café.”

Almost half of the customers formed a line on the opposite side. Jenna hurried to get another piece of stationary and pencil. She found an empty jar and tucked it under her arm. “Listen up. If you want to support me then sign your name on this petition.” She wrote a few words on the top. “If you can’t write, I’ll help you sign your name.” Then she held up the jar. “This jar is for any letters you want to write to send to the Judge when he comes in a few days. I’ll leave it set on the counter so you can stop by and drop the letter off. Please, only one per person.”

She organized the townsfolk, handing the pencil to each person when they got to the head of the line. Some added their signature by drawing a mark, so Jenna wrote down their name along the side. She didn’t want any disputes whether it was legitimate or not.

An hour later most of the crowd thinned. Jenna waited patiently until the last of her customers had gone then flipped the sign and set about clearing the dining room. Alice finished up and left, leaving Matt and her alone.

She sat down on one of the chairs in the dining room, exhausted. The café closed for a few hours in the afternoon, giving them all time to prepare for the supper meal. Matt sat across from Jenna, leaning over to push a wisp of hair that fell over her eye. She hadn’t the energy to move it away.

He took her hands in his. “You look tired. Why don’t you go get some rest this afternoon.”

Jenna gave him a smile. That would be nice. “I have work to do.”

Matt shook his head. “No, you don’t. As a matter of fact, the dumplings are finished, simmering on the stove. There will be only two things on the menu this evening. Your patrons will have a choice of Chicken Dumplings with delicious fresh bread or what I call a John Montagu Sandwich.”

“What in the world is a John Montagu Sandwich?” She was able to make plenty of cold cut sandwiches when they were ordered but preferred to serve hot meals.

“He is the originator of the sandwich. John Montagu was an aristocrat in 18th century England. It seems he ordered his valet to get him a handful of meats and put it between two slices of bread.
